The Long Winters @ Doug FirThe Long Winters @ Doug Fir
I was lucky enough to catch The Long Winters last Friday at Doug Fir in Portland, OR. Simply an amazing show in a great venue. For those who don't know, The Long Winters are known for power-pop with a focus on terrific emotional songwriting (as are many of their North West contemporaries) and that's exactly what we got.
Turns out it was a pre-party for the release of their new CD Putting the Days to Bed. These guys put on a killer show, one of those bands that really ups your appreciation for them when you see them live.
We were able to get right up in front (not that we needed to, Doug Fir is a smaller venue with good sight-lines and sounds) and were right in the middle of one of the best band/crowd interactions I've seen in quite awhile. John Roderick had quite the back-and-forth going, it was fun to watch without being too distracting from the music.
Speaking of... They played some songs I'd not heard before that I really enjoyed and it got even better when they went into acoustic mode. You can really get a feel for the emotion of the music when John sings, and this goes double live. His happy face mixed with that terrific, joyful voice can't help but make you smile along. Highly recommended.
Tour Dates
They're going to be in Austin on Sept 15th for the Austin City Limits Festival.
(Big thanks to Megan Cole for help with the pix and the tip about the show!)
