Crazy Love Mix: Sexual HealingCrazy Love Mix: Sexual Healing

Day 10 in a crazy attempt to post 5 love songs every day till Valentines Day

Sure "Sexual Healing" is a classic but does anybody really need 4 versions of the same song by the same artist? Why yes, yes I do. Ben Harper's cover of "Sexual Healing" is warmer and more sexual than Marvin Gaye's version. It's also easily one of my top 5 cover songs ever. The "Brit Remix" is a version I made for an old girlfriend back in high school. You'll have to listen closely for my extra touch. I'm throwing in Hot Chip's awesome cover as well in case BH isn't your thing (but he should be).

Day 1 in a crazy attempt to post 5 love songs every day till Valentines Day

Let's get this vday fest off with a set of songs on the slightly bitter side of love. Instead of facing the fact that he/she might not like you, many find it more comforting to assume the apple in their eye plays for the other team.

Day 17 in a crazy attempt to post 5 Christmas songs every day till Christmas

This post was totally inspired by that website a few years ago where you could listen to the audio of movies. It was really great, you could relive your favorite stories without the distraction of video while you work or drive. Here are some of my favorite Christmas TV specials in audio form. Throw it on while doing your last minute shopping or as a bedtime story.

The Muppet Family Christmas is one of my favorites that I finally tracked down this year. It has the Muppets, Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock all in one big special (with plenty of sing-a-longs). The History Channel's special is also fantastic, opening your eyes to why we have Christmas trees, why the gentlemen of the olden days loved holly so much and other background stories on the traditions we know today.

Day 15 in a crazy attempt to post 5 Christmas songs every day till Christmas

Christmas is a time for family, sharing, and spreading yule-tide cheer with your odd-couple co-singer. Here's a special mix compiled by Len Marry (thanks Len!)

* Porn Orchard's tune was included because it's often circulated as "Peter Murphy and Tom Waits" (strange bedfellows indeed!) but was in fact by Porn Orchard and the Opal Foxx Quartet for a 1993 compilation by the Athens, GA magazine, Flagpole's "The Mother of All Flagpole Christmas Albums". The impressions are top notch. Curtiss Pernice played the part of Tom Waits and Ted Hafer did Peter Murphy (of Bauhaus). - source

Yes, these Christmas mixes are taking their toll. Here's five songs that only have the first letter of their band name in common. And rest assured that Wierd Al song was written in '86, way before the 9/11 attacks. "Elvis Presley recorded his first Christmas album in sessions of September 5 - 7, 1957 at Radio Recorders in Hollywood. It was simply entitled "Elvis' Christmas Album" and was released in October 1957. It initially hit #1 for 4 weeks on Billboard's pop album chart and revisited the chart due to strong sales in subsequent holiday seasons through 1962." (source).

On a side note, this fellow pb-lover (peanut butter not Podbop, though he might have loved that too) sure knew how to make a killer sandwich for the holidays.

Here's a special treat from your grandparent's time. Where Will You Be Christmas Day? was curated by Dick Spotswood and sports 24 holiday tracks from 1917 to 1959. Before the heavy post-production days, these tracks have been praised by the press for their pureness in a time before Christmas had grown so commercial.

Day 8 in a crazy attempt to post 5 Christmas songs every day till Christmas

Carol Of The Bells is probably my favorite of the classic Christmas tunes. It's also known as the "Ukranian Bell Carol" and was first played to American audiences in 1921 at Carnegie Hall. It also seems to be the version that let's people get really creative with their renditions. Check out these 5 totally different versions arranged from shortest (1:18) to longest (6:19).

Day 7 in a crazy attempt to post 5 Christmas songs every day till Christmas

Christmas music doesn't need vocals to give you that holiday cheer. Put on these joyful instrumental tracks to get in the Santa spirit and relive cherished memories. I will never forget in first grade when I played a toy soldier in the Nutcracker. My feet start marching to this day when I hear that march. The Trans-Siberian Orchestra tune was my favorite Christmas song we ever played in band during high school.

The Del.icio.us DozenThe Del.icio.us Dozen

deliciousdozen.jpg

Our weekly feature where we comb through the mp3s that have been bookmarked on del.icio.us to bring you those hidden treasures (in no particular order).

1. Kings Of Convenience - Know How (featuring Feist) - The Norwegian duo's signature folk-pop touched with a hint of Leslie Feist's beautiful croon.

2. Windows Sounds, Concerto Style - Microsoft Windows' system sounds mashed into a piano concerto piece.

3. Bishop Allen - Like Castanets - From their September EP (they are doing one EP a month all year), this one's got a bit of spanish feel to it. Collectively, their monthly EP project is one of the highlights of music in 2006.

4. Psychiatric Office Answering Machine - "If you have are codependent have someone press 2 for you"

5. Ian Love - The Only Night - Reminds me of Matt Costa and Matt Nathanson a bit.

6. Plus/Minus - Steal The Blueprints - I've been listening to this album a lot while I was in NYC the past 3 weeks. Really, really great stuff. Sadly I missed their CMJ performance.

7. Prince - Alphabet Street - How can Prince not put you in a good lets-party-this-weekend mood?

8. Toots And The Maytals - Living In The Ghetto - Sing it brotha'

9. Local H - Wolf Like Me (TV On The Radio Cover) - Hahaha. Remember Local H? They were from Chicago and weren't half bad.

10. Grauzone - Eisbar - Swedish art punk. You may not understand a word, but the bleeps will keep you entertained.

11. Architecture In Helsinki - Do The Whirlwind (Hot Chip Remix) - AiH were soooo good live. Check out my photos from their CMJ performance

12. The Robbers - The Fatalist - A healthy dose of indie-rock helps the day go by.

Presenting a new weekly feature where we comb through the mp3s that have been bookmarked on del.icio.us to bring you those hidden treasures.

1. The Tacobell Canon: Music without instruments [mp3] - An acappella take on Canon in D about your favorite south-of-the-border treat.

2. Hobo Names [mp3] - #8,391 Cart Herding Harry (but I only listened up to #76)

3. The Animals - Hey Gyp [mp3] - You can't buy love, but you can trade it for a Cadillac.

4. The Ringtone Of Youth [mp3] - You've seen those commercials with that silent ringtone? The NYTimes has an article and this mp3 to offer.

5. Bathtub Shitter - World Dun Hole [mp3] - I find this Japanese grindcore band notable only for their name; an apparent tribute to tubgirl

6. Xiu Xiu - I Broke Up (Live on KVRX 91.7FM Austin)[mp3] - Wait for it..the startling scream half way through makes it all worthwhile

7. Matt Nathenson - Starfish And Coffee (Live Prince Cover) [mp3] - I must admit, I've had a version of this cover on my computer for years, in this one he's especially chatty

8. Edith Piaf - La Foule [mp3] - French opera music can be uplifting

9. Clinton Got A Blowjob [mp3] - Hilarious song about Bush's atrocities and Clintons lil ol bj

10. RIAA - Casper The Friendly Queen [mp3] - Just when you thought there was nothing that hadnt been mashed with a Queen track..

11. Dial scan of New York's FM band the night John Lennon Died [mp3] - Interesting, I wonder who had the foresight to record this. A really interesting time-capsule piece.

12. Jay Z - Show Me What You Got [mp3] - From the cyclical retiree-comeback king

Kevin's Final MixKevin's Final Mix

Kevin Brandon Kevin Richard Brandon was a friend of my mother. He was 41 years old when he shot himself on May 27, 2006 in his home in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. He was a kind man who shared his wealth with all around him (strangers included). After giving away all his belongings and company in the US, he ended up winning back over 200k in online gambling, which he used to move to Mexico in 2004. He was a methamphetimine addict who used it to deal with his depression, made worse be the fact that his ex-wife wouldn't let him see or speak to their six children.

My mother and Kevin spoke every day for the four weeks prior to his suicide. When she hadn't heard from him for three days, she went to look for him and was the first to find him lying dead in his apartment. He left my mother, among other posessions, an iPod with a playlist entitled Final Mix.

Final Mix

1. Matchbox 20 - Shame
2. Matchbox 20 - Long Day
3. Cowboy Junkies - Misguided Angel
4. James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover
5. Dire Straits - Why Worry
6. Keb' Mo' - I'm Telling You Now
7. Miles Davis - Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World
8. Enya - Only Time
9. Kenny G - End of the Night
10. Collective Soul - Pretty Donna (Instrumental)
11. Mark Knopfler - Last Exit To Brooklyn
12. Mark Knopfler - Last Exit to Brooklyn (Finale)
13. Pink Floyd - Goodbye Cruel World

I can't help but find this playlist chilling and heartbreaking. I think it's also an important message that if you know an addict, help them get the support they need.
